Wednesday Wisdom: Experiencing the Power of Spiritual Practice

On just about every Wednesday evening throughout the year, you can find Rev. Judee Chapman, one of our assistant ministers, up on the Center's platform hosting a middle-week experiential service for an audience who has found something special and extraordinary.

Since starting the mid-week 'faith lift' in 2004, six-months after becoming an ordained Religious Science minister, Rev. Judee's Wednesday Wisdom service has grown and evolved, most recently adding the tagline Practicing the Presence.

"Practicing the Presence means to me that everything and everyone is sacred and we all have the ability to connect with the Divine, if we so choose!" explained Rev. Judee. "But just like everything else, we need to engage and invest in spiritual practices like prayer, chanting, meditation, silence, inspirational talks, etc. to have it work in our lives."

To add an experiential element to the Wednesday service, Rev. Judee started seeking out speakers and activities that would support those spiritual practices. In the past, the Wednesday's Wisdom has hosted a wide variety of diverse services including, but not limited to:
  • meditation,
  • healing services,
  • drumming,
  • Native American ceremonies,
  • solstice ceremonies (winter, spring, summer, and fall),
  • singing bowls,
  • concerts,
  • Taize meditations,
  • interactive discussions,
  • Q&A on the Science of Mind,
  • Season for Nonviolence peace meditations and readings, and
  • personal empowerment talks (like Al Wallace and his personal growth story about walking the Pacific Crest Trail and Anita Baroldi with her spiritual transformation experienced while walking the Camino de Santiago in Spain.)

When asked what draws her to a particular topic, Rev. Judee replied, "I am open to anything that values living our life 'out loud!'"

Many practitioners and ministers, from within and outside our Center, have shared their gift of personal awakening or subjects that inspire them during the Wednesday service.

Rev. Judee believes that anyone who is grounded in love and service to our Center and humanity is welcome to have a evening to share their wisdom. To get a spot on the monthly calendar all potential speakers need to do is ask. Once she receives a request, Rev. Judee has a short discussion with the speaker on what topic they want to share and then finds a date on the schedule.

"I have never had to turn anyone away so far," said Rev. Judee. "For instance, a practitioner came to me on Sunday and said 'I have a talk that has been brewing in me for six months. Can I 'book'  a Wednesday service?' I said, 'Yes, of course!'"

When people leave the Wednesday's Wisdom "Practicing the Presence" service, Rev. Judee knows that they leave with something that will enrich their life.

"Maybe it is a new spiritual practice, or a new person that they meet, or just a place to BE  and feel loved and accepted for who they are," Rev. Judee explained. "I want them to leave fulfilled and happy that they came!"

More than anything, Rev. Judee knows that each and every person can benefit from attending the service and by making it their mid-week habit!

The Wednesday's Wisdom Service is every Wednesday evening beginning at 7 p.m. in the Center for Spiritual Living Capistrano Valley Sanctuary. On the first Wednesday of the month there is a potluck starting at 5:45 p.m. Everyone is invited to bring a dish and experience a sense of community and friendship. Childcare is only available on the first Wednesday so families can come for the potluck dinner and adults can enjoy the service afterwards.

If you have questions about Wednesday's Wisdom or feel called to be a presenter, email Rev. Judee.

Do You Hear Voices?

Ya, okay. I hear ya, man!, Okay, Gotcha!, Sure thing. Ya-ya-ya!! Sure man! uh-huh. Yes. I hear you.
But do we really hear?  And what are we listening to in the first place that we are saying yes to?

Check out the smile on the face of this seven week old hearing the external world for the first time!

It's time to start paying attention to what we are listening to and what we are saying yes to! There is so much noise in our lives and much of it is background - other people's conversations in restaurants, shops, in the office next door, there is our music, our kids/colleagues music and even the music in the car passing by. There is the noise of the media- both audio and written that we are being "gifted" with and, there is the noise of the voices in own head judging, doubting, complaining, praising, evaluating, and the list goes on and on.....

So how are we supposed to hear the true voice, the internal voice of God that speaks just to me, just to you and leads us perfectly, competently, safely on this journey of life?

What if we just close our eyes and listen to the stillness, the peace of true contentment for the voice of Truth. would we hear it? I say yes!

What if those very voices that are seemingly drowning out our peace and well being are actually Voices of God?

This week at the Wednesday Wisdom Service at our center my talk is titled The Voices of God. I invite you to join us for a beautiful service that will include some talking, some listening, beautiful music provided by the talented Rick Dale and lots of insight into the wonder and joy of hearing the voices all around us.

E PLURIBUS MUSICUM: A HISTORY OF AMERICAN MUSIC

Wednesday Wisdom: Potluck & Sing-Along
Come join us Wednesday for a one-hour history of the United States through the melting pot of its music. I figure that everyone will actually be busy on the 4th of July, so having our celebration on Wednesday the 2nd makes a lot of sense.
Since it is the first Wednesday of the month, there will be a potluck starting at 5:45. We are going to have a sing-along starting at 6:45, with the concert starting at 7:00. There will be lots of singing along during the concert, so come prepared to have a good time.
The name of the concert means “from many, music,” and is of course a play on “E Pluribus Unum”, the United States motto. A lot of people don’t know that “E Pluribus Unum” (“from many, one”) is the original motto of the United States. “In God We Trust” was added to coins in 1864, but did not become a national motto until the 1950’s, the same time “under God” was added to the Pledge of Allegiance. These were ostensibly to combat “godless Communism”, but I find both of them an offensive commingling of church and state. The concert goes back to that original definition of the United States as a melting pot: a coming together of different peoples, the free exchange of ideas, in this case musical ideas. The music that is uniquely “American” has always been a mixture of multiple styles that came before, so it makes an excellent analogue to this.

Kimberly and I have been toying around with the idea of putting together a one-hour “cruise ship” format show around this idea. You can think of this as the first draft of such a show. We are pleased to be joined by the “Fire Pit Players”: Karyn Allen and Rick Dale, Hans Smith and Darrolyn Fennelly, Patty Coquillard, with Jimmy Vann on the piano. This gives us a lot more leeway to add some extra voices and instruments and styles and harmonies. We hope to see you there!

Are you a Spiritual Elitist?

A few weeks ago, while on a Photo Shot in Sedona I ran into two young women who were having trouble taking pictures with their new Nikon camera. Of course I offered to take a picture with both of them in it and to help them with their camera Issues. When I asked where they were from they said Russia. Then a funny thing happened to me inside, I paused and started feeling resentful inside. In my mind, all the terrible things that were happening in the Ukraine started flooding through me. Before I knew it I was suddenly Anti-Russian and Pro-Ukrainian . It became very apparent that I was transferring all of the biased news reporting that I had watched on TV onto these two strangers. I was “Not Open at the Top” as our Spiritual Teaching asks us to be.

For what seemed like an eternity in my mind, I final said “Welcome to the USA” to both of the girls and really meant it.

This feeling of being “Open at the Top” made me look at our teaching of the Science of Mind and how we see ourselves in the Spiritual Community. My question to everyone is: “As Religious Scientists, are you as open about your faith and as tolerant about other religious faiths as you think you are?” We say there is no Dogma within our teaching but is that really true. Do we believe that our way is the best way to connect with Spirit or is there room to be “Open at the top” to other teachings.

I decided to make up an arbitrary list of questions/statements to ask myself. Take the challenge for yourself and let me know if this brought up any feelings inside of you.

• “All wrong-doing arises because of mind. If mind is transformed can wrong-doing remain?”- Buddhism-
• How does it make you feel when someone asks “Are you a Christian”?
• If someone says at church “I am a Recovered Catholic” is that a put down of another religious belief even though it seems funny to you?
• “I want to use Crystals to Open my Chakra’s” Does that statement resonate with you or repel you?-New Age_
• What do you say when someone asks you is” Jesus Christ Your savior”?
• On Sunday, when you singing “I am God” do you embrace that feeling or do you have trouble believing it. • “Allah be Praised” …. “Fear Allah wherever you may be”- Muslim-
• “All that we are is the result of what we have thought. The mind is everything. What we think we become.”-Buddhism
• “During my Past Life Regression I discovered that I was a nun in the 12th • “One man’s candle is light for many” – Talmud on Shabbat
• "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law." - Galatians 5:22-23 Century”

These are all random questions or statements. They are not meant to embarrass or criticize anyone. My intention is for all of us to look at our faith and realize that all things come from Spirit. It is through Spirit that we exist and we are given the opportunity to choose wisely in our human experience. By being “Open at the top” we can see the Divine Wisdom that Spirit has provided to us. By choosing Love , caring, beauty, grace , compassion, kindness, gratitude (to name just a few ) we allow our faith to be powerful , practical and hold a meaningful place in our lives. By choosing wisely we surrender to the Divine truth in all of us and release all things that no longer serve us. By choosing wisely we embody the true meaning of the “Christ Consciousness “ in everything that we do regardless of where the information originally came from.

Even though I may have hesitated with the two Russian girls for a moment the Divine Wisdom of Spirit prevailed so that I could truly say “ Welcome….” And mean it.

Take a moment now to click on the music and meditate on your Faith. Namaste Rev. Arpad Petrass

The One Creative Intelligence

Science of Mind teaching diagram
It’s a Philosophy, a Teaching, and a Science
Many of us have questions about how we can live a full and wonderful life.  One of those ways is to affirm out Truth!   Each week at our Sunday service we repeat:

Declaration of Principles
I believe in God, the one Creative Intelligence operating through the Universe and operating throughout my entire being now and always.  I believe this perfect Creative Intelligence can be used by me and by every other person, to produce health, abundance and love, in mind,  body and total life experience.  I use it now, and I rejoice in it.  And so it is!

This Wednesday at the mid week service we will discuss how to use this ‘creative Intelligence’ in the creative process and how it operates.
The creative process starts with the Ideal, the Divine thought, so to speak.  It moves through us as intuition which becomes our idea.  This idea of something we chose to create, has a journey through imagination, inspiration, action, and creates our experience in the physical world.  After the demonstration of our intention or idea, we travel to reaction, feeling, cognition, knowledge, recognition, and finally WISDOM, which is truly the ultimate goal.
So what exactly is Science of Mind?

It’s a Philosophy, a Teaching, and a Science

  • A philosophy, in that it explains the way the universe works and our place in it
  • A teaching as it shows us how to regain our personal power
  • A science because we are taught how to use the universal principles to demonstrate success in our daily lives.  This is called the creative process!

Science of Mind is based on principles (the creative process) that support our spiritual growth.

“There is a Power for good in the universe, greater than you are – and you can use it!”
— Ernest Holmes

Everyone has ideas. But what where do they come from? And what ensures they keep coming? How do you sort the genius ideas from the useless ones? Why invest all this hope and energy into making things in the first place?  Creative thinkers across a variety of disciplines find common methods, habits, mindsets and neuroses that help bring breakthrough ideas into being. This is a thoughtful and intimate look at the creative process.

Blessings,
Judee A. Chapman,
Assistant Minister

Change Your Karma

karma purse
Everyone is in their true place.
The above title only makes sense when the term Karma is misunderstood to mean Fate. Something from which you cannot escape. For a long time I have observed that many people use certain terms such as the term Karma without a full understanding of what the word actually means.

According to the late Alan Watts, when Hindus and Buddhists use the word Karma they are using it as meaning action, from the Sanskrit root meaning to do. Watts offers a meaning of Karma as being that “this arises” “that becomes.” He notes that due to certain seldom unexamined assumptions prevalent in “Western Thought.” Western interpretations take it as meaning a law of Cause and Effect or Cosmic retribution.

Watts notes that in a fuller explanation in Buddhist philosophy there is a concept of the interdependent origination of all the forms and phases of life. Thus, what you do and what is happening to you and to every other person or thing is inseparable.

In one form of viewing Karma it is seen as a chain, often equated to bondage. Simplistic interpretations see it as “Good” Karma and “Bad” which then equates to the idea that if you do good things then good things happen to you and if you do bad things then bad things happen to you.

Watts adds ."Now, you may say, 'I did not mean to do that.' One school of thought will explain events by saying, 'You did something in a former life, or at a former time, that is now having this consequence.' However, that is a very superficial understanding of karma. You do not need to believe in reincarnation to understand karma ...

With one aspect you are doing what you call the environment and with the other aspect you are doing what you call the organism, this living body. Since you cannot possibly conceive of the existence of a living body with no environment, there is the clue that the two are basically one. As with the two poles of a magnet, north is quite different from south, and yet they are both part of one magnet.

In precisely the same way, you are both what you do and what happens to you. You have a little game in which you play that you are not responsible for what happens to you, you are only responsible for what you do. (emphasis mine) … Basically it comes down to the fact that you are responsible for everything …

The place in life where you are is where you have put yourself. Just as on the surface of the sphere every point may be regarded as the center of the surface, so every place may be regarded as the true place.

Everyone is in their true place.

In whatever language you say it, everybody is a manifestation of the divine, playing this game … Your not knowing it, if you do not know it, is part of the game … " ~Alan Watts...

This Wednesdays evening at 7:00 pm we will look at practical ways to make your life work better for you.

Come Share Your Experience of Healing

Healing is constant natural event
We know matter is energy, so the Energy Field contains both matter and energy. That energy is in constant motion of change. Thats why we call it The Law of Uncertainty.

On the other hand we also know that we are fundamentally spiritual expressions of Divine Spirit, Certainty Field. In the Energy Field of matter we are particles and waves.

We live in a field of consciousness. That field can activate our Energy Field or our Divine Spirit, Certainty Field. We are at choice as to which field governs our reality. In healing we get out of our Energy Field and focus on our Divine Spirit, Certainty Field of consciousness.

We attach our consciousness on loving the Divine Field of our selves. When we observe the Divines within our inclusive self and know that we are one with everything we can change the energy of physical consciousness into Divine Spiritual Consciousness.

"When you change the way you observe things, the things that you observe will change."

Come join us this Wednesday evening and share your experiences of healing.
Love, Rev. Geoff Layng

THE HEALING POWER OF MUSIC

There is no question in my mind about the healing power of music.  Whether I'm listening to it, writing it, playing it, or singing it, there is an inner healing occurring both at the cellular level and at the soul level. Although I haven't had any recent physical challenges to overcome, I have certainly felt my own emotional healing occur from music.

A few months ago, I was experiencing a challenging time in my life.  It felt like life was coming at me from all directions and I could barely breathe, let a lone cry! All along, listening to calm, meditative music on a regular basis kept me sane but I was still far from healed. Because I am a musician, one of my responsibilities is to sing on a regular basis, and this definitely brings my spirits up each time, but there was still a huge hole.

As days and weeks went by, and daily I passed those 88 keys on the way in and out of my house, never sitting down in front of them to caress their beautiful ivories, it finally came to me in the shower (where most of my revelations happen) like a ton of bricks! The question screamed to me in my mind, "When was the last time you sat down at the piano and played?!" Immediately after drying off and getting dressed, I sat down on the hard wood bench, blew the dust off of some of my old pieces of sheet music, and finally moved those rusty ol' fingers. I must admit, the fingers were not dancing off the keys at first, but thus the journey back home began.

Music did its healing work and now I will always remember the power it has to make the world a better place.

As a way to give back and share this healing experience with others, I will be co-facilitating a music event at the Center for Spiritual Living Capistrano Valley on Wednesday, April 2, 2014. The evening will begin with a community potluck at 5:45pm (bring your favorite dish to share), and then will commence with a "Community Hootenanny" from 7:00-8:00pm. We are asking everyone to bring an acoustic instrument or percussion to play (there will be a limited amount of extra percussion instruments available for those who do not bring one.) This is an evening for the whole family, so come down, bring the kids and some of your friends for an evening of fun, food, fellowship and music!

Who is God?

"I Believe in God" by Rev. Judee Chapman
Every Sunday morning, we read the Declaration of Principles together as a congregation and ......... every time I repeat those words, my faith is restored. To me, the first statement of Truth, "I believe in God", is the most powerful and makes me think...... 'hmmmmm' Who is God? This Wednesday we will explore what 'God' is and why we believe it is 'The Thing Itself'.

The next declaration is " the One Creative Intelligence"... etc. It appears to me that this Intelligence is within us and that we can create what we put our attention on in our life. We will discuss the 'creative process' and how we create our experiences through these dynamic spiritual laws.

Travel To Israel this Wednesday in San Clemente

Travel With Spirit Wherever You Are
A recent journey to Israel was a powerful experience. I visited places that are considered holy to Christians, Muslims and Jews. I stood in places where Jesus lived and taught in Jerusalem and Nazareth, walked the Via Dolorosa where he carried his cross on the way to his crucifixion and entered the Church of the Holy Sepulchre where many think he was prepared, buried and rose again.

This experience led me back to reading and reflecting on some of the teachings of the Master Teacher Jesus, one of the most important figures that has ever appeared in the history of mankind.

This Wednesday, I'll share some photos from my trip and a few stories from a metaphysical viewpoint about Jesus' teachings that may surprise you. I welcome dialogue and will invite you to try on a new thought and apply it to your life so that you can travel with spirit wherever you are!

Love,
Rev Ann

Our Universal Reflections & Wednesday Wisdom Potluck

universal reflections of love and joy
Join us Wednesday night and bring Joy to the world and a dish to share!
Our reality is determined by how we perceive and relate to our self perception and other people.

Our physical perception of reality is based upon temporal circumstances that are constantly changing. It often creates feelings of fear, worry and stress that leads to illness and depression.

Our spiritual perception is based on our universal reflection of divine love and joy.

It is a perception of Oneness with everyone and being in harmony with the universe.

Every day we can be in harmony with universal reflections by bringing joy into our life and sharing joy with others.

Join us Wednesday night and bring Joy to the world and a dish to share!
Love,

What's in your Blind Spot?

Wednesday Wisdom 7pm Tonight with Pattie Mercado
Find a place in nature and know.
The topic for my talk at Wednesday's Wisdom this week is "What's in Your Blind Spot?"  If you know the answer then - well it isn't really a blind spot! Or is it?  When we start exploring the uncharted territory that is our blind spot we find ourselves in that sometimes terrifying place of the unknown. When we start to understand that a blind spot cannot be seen with the human eye, but is sensed even though well hidden behind fear, arrogance, false modesty and more there is an opportunity to set aside, lie down the false belief that has held us back and for the Truth to set us free. My starting place for the inquiry into blind spots began many years ago when I first heard the words: "Can you afford the arrogance of not knowing something the knowing of which could transform your life?" The answer then and now is a resounding no! So, I find myself doing all sorts of contortions to make sure that I am checking my blind spot, being sensitive, checking in, etc. and really it is so much simpler than I have made it out to be!

It's a powerful inquiry that I am looking forward to deepening at our Wednesday Wisdom service. The exploration is so much better when it is shared and our mid week faith lift is the engaging and uplifting event where everyone has a part to play; where we share in the expansion of life and our understanding of it.

Visioning: What is Waiting to Express?

A quote from Dr. Michael Beckwith ~
"As far as a very basic description, you first center yourself through meditation or contemplative prayer in which you commune with the Ineffable, activating a field of unconditional love. Once your consciousness is open and receptive, you place questions before your higher Self: What is the highest vision for my life? What must I become in order to manifest this vision?  What qualities must I cultivate?  What qualities must I release?  What talents, gifts, skills and qualities do I already possess that will serve this vision?  Then follows a deep listening with an open heart, pushing away nothing that arises or judging it. This practice can be effectively applied in all aspects of one’s life. "Life Visioning Technology - Michael Beckwith

After reading Dr. Beckwith's definition of visioning and watching his two minute video,  I think you will agree with me that this is a very powerful spiritual practice.

On Wednesday, February 19, at 7 p.m.  September Warren,  who was trained in the visioning process by Dr. Michael Beckwith, we be leading us in a visioning for our Wednesday's Wisdom service at the Center.  I invite everyone to attend this creative and inspirational evening.

There are so many wonderful spiritual practices that we already are familiar with and participate in on a daily basis (i.e.  prayer, meditation, silence, chanting, listening, and many more!)  So! I am very excited to experience this relatively new avenue to a higher consciousness.

Dr. Beckwith also says, "The cool part of it all is that none of us never know how far what’s birthed by the inspiration of the heart can reach out and impact the world in a positive, uplifting way, which is why I encourage people to go beyond self-consciousness and have the courage to deliver their gifts, talents, and skills in the world."

So let's create something wonderful and new together!

Sweet Blessings,

Reverend Judee Chapman
