A New Way to Honor Myself

This is Black Friday. While many of you have been shopping since early morning, I am doing something completely different this year. I am sitting in the comfort of my home, barely out of my pajamas, enjoying a relaxing cup of tea and writing my thoughts.

Because I am co-facilitating the Financial Peace University course with Rev. Pattie, I decided to truly set and stay on a budget this holiday season.  To help me do that, I have asked my friends, our board members and staff not to give me gifts this year because I often feel pressured internally to buy and have often over-spent and I invariably feel guilty if I have not had an equal exchange of energy. (I am quite aware, that this is co-dependence at its finest, and a more spiritually mature person would simply receive with grace without batting an eye.) I asked each one to help me stay on my budget by not giving me a gift!

However, I know myself and that is always the beginning of spiritual growth -- to honestly tell yourself the truth. 

While I was asking the board members not to give me anything, a brilliant idea came to mind. In lieu of giving gifts to friends, family, board and staff, I would set a certain amount and give it to a couple of worthy causes such as South County Outreach and Heifer International, which is a non-profit dedicated to ending hunger and poverty through sustainable means. South County Outreach is asking for items of clothing like socks and underwear.

I love both of these organizations. Heifer International because it is based on helping people learn how to be more self-sufficient by learning how to look after the chickens, goats or water buffalo that they have received so they can live more independently. South County outreach because I will be making  a difference right here in Orange County.

The Board of Trustees thought this was a great idea so they are joining me in this project. I will collect money for Heifer International until the end of December then however much we have collected, I will share it with Heifer International for them to use it where it is needed the most.

For South County outreach, I will collect until December 14, then go and purchase the clothing that is most needed.

I feel greatly inspired. I will stick to my budget. I will feel great about the money I am spending because it will be going to great causes. I have not moved from my computer! Easiest holiday gift-buying ever!

I am going to open it up to members of our congregation who would love to help too. It is a way to honor myself AND make a difference in the world. Be the one who makes a difference!

So here we are in the month of Thanksgiving… Yes, literally Thanksgiving day is November 24th...this week! So how did this happen so quickly?! We are well within the last hundred days of the year… As I count those days down with those in my Empowerment group that are removing from their proverbial plates that which has not served them this year (at least... Other than, knowing that which they do not desire in their lives )…as we...together Make room for New Beginnings … For miracles in 2017!

Hold that thought. Ask yourself… Is it not the time to practice Thanksgiving and Gratitude all throughout the year… And not simply at the time of Thanksgiving holiday? Of course, it is...for it is Gratitude that shifts our focus from what we may feel our life lacks to the abundance that is already present. Giving thanks makes us happier, healthier, and more resilient… As it strengthens our relationships ....as it enhances and contributes positively to every area of our life!

One of the most profound ways to express gratitude is through generosity of Spirit. The act of giving to others. The size of the gift is really unimportant. Rather, it is the act of giving, particularly when it is a gift of the Spirit… enabling others to be grateful for your generosity. The act of gratitude… to give pure of your heart and to give abundantly… Provides for us to be even more grateful in every area of our lives.

Today.… I invite YOU to count your blessings… Noticing simple pleasures, as well as, acknowledging everything that you have received.... That you continue to receive. And… As you do this, I trust and believe that you will become aware of… On a continuous basis… Of how much you have been given! Of this….I AM certain!

BE The Source within YOU....Now!
Once again…Always remember, what YOU do and who YOU are…..MATTERS! 
May your Thanksgiving be filled with Love, Laughter, remembrances of good times...and new good times in the making, as well as Happy appetites! Happy Thanksgiving!

Abide With Me

The first line of a hymn from my childhood is in my heart and mind. 
"Abide With me; fast falls the eventide;
  the darkness deepens; Lord, with me abide;
 When other helpers fail and comforts flee,
 Help of the helpless, oh, abide with me."  Henry F. Lyte

I know that it may sound old-fashioned, but I also feel the wisdom and power in the words.  It is really the spiritual solution to absolutely every kind of darkness, every problem, every concern. It is asking the Lord (the Law and the Love)  to stay with us.

The word abide means to stay, or remain, or even tarry.

The song was inspired by scripture, Luke 24:29. It was after Jesus resurrection and the disciples were begging Jesus to stay with them.

Knowing that the Christ consciousness is the consciousness of oneness, of infinite possibilities, peace, comfort and hope, we begin to understand why this old hymn was so popular at funerals in mid 20th century. When we feel abandoned or left behind, passed over or grief-stricken, we need God's help. The answer is always to turn to God. When we do, the presence embraces us and gives of Itself - peace, comfort, love.

Today I am grieving the passing of our dear friend Rev. Michael DiFebo. I know with absolute certainty that Rev. Michael lives on and lives better where he is now. And I also know that for his friends and family, hope, comfort and peace are desperately needed. None of us were ready to let him go.He was a vibrant, loving, gregarious bigger-than-life man of faith. I know that Rev. Michael is now fully abiding in God. I know the answer for all of us left behind, the answer is to ask God to "stay with us." 

You are probably wondering why I would phrase it that way. God does not have to be coaxed to stay with us. God cannot abandon us, for It is in us, responding to us, whether or not we believe in God. However, the simple act of asking for God's help opens the floodgates of love, peace and comfort (that were there all along.) It opens our receptiveness to God's love.

So the key is to keep God, Divine Mind, eternal Loving-Kindness,foremost  in our minds and hearts. Then the "helpless' become the "helped."

I am reminded of singing in the junior choir in the United Church (of Canada) in my childhood home of Conquest, Saskatchewan. Of course I was a school girl then. I didn't understand death because I didn't understand the nature of life. But now those lyrics are deeply meaningful to me. I know I am uplifted when I turn to God and abide in God's love.

On Gentleness...

Thought 4 Today...Thought 4 LIFE!

On Gentleness...

On a recent visit back East to see my family, I have spent most of the time with my precious grandson, baby James. Through our adventures and escapades, I found myself asking him to, "BE Gentle!" Yes,  "Be gentle"  With your toys, with Harry (the dog), with going up and down the stairs...  And, especially, with Siti (that would be me...grandma in Arabic).
Regardless of age, gender...Yes, even boys can be gentle...Political persuasion, food groups of choice, or favorite football team, the art of  BEing gentle knows no limits! Although the body and the mind may  sometimes feel inclined to not be gentle...  To shout, rather then see the strength in silence... our Spiritual Power...our Authentic Power from within need not flex any muscle to demonstrate even the greatest strength.


As  I practice gentleness with baby James, encouraging him to do the same with himself, with me, with others, I AM provided with an even deeper respect for the wonder and goodness, as well as the temporariness of all our relationships. Especially, this time with baby James, I fully realize The present.  That whatever particular moment we happen to be experiencing together will never be repeated in just the same way again. That realization ... That declaration moves me into an even more gentle Presence  A Sacredness! Of this  I AM certain!


Gentleness...  That tender touch, those kind words and gestures, a true soft-spokenness... All indicating a Consciousness  of being present and caring! That is what our planet needs in order that each and everyone of us may feel and exude the love and power within us...  Encouraging the love and power of others ...that we collectively may live as, first and foremost, the Spiritual Beings that we are.

Today...  I invite YOU to practice BEing more gentle in all that you do...  In all who you are!
For it is then that you may truly know the blessing that you are ... And all the blessings that surround you!

BE The Source within YOU...Now!

Once again…Always remember, what YOU do and who YOU are…..MATTERS! 

Yes…for me…I no longer need to know exactly where I AM going.  For me…All I need to Know is that I AM On My Way!

I know that Divine Intelligence governs the destiny of the United States of America, directing the thought and the activity of all who guide its affairs.

I know that success, prosperity, and happiness are the gifts of freedom, and are the Divine heritage of everyone in this country.

I know that success, prosperity, and happiness are now operating in the affairs of every individual in this country.

I know that Divine guidance enlightens the collective mind of the people of this country, causing it to know that economic security may come to all without the loss of either personal freedom or individual self-expression.

I know that no one can believe or be led to believe that freedom must be surrendered in order to insure economic security for all.

The All-Knowing Mind of God contains the answer to every problem which confronts this country.

I know that every leader in this country is now directed to this All-Knowing Mind and has the knowledge of a complete solution to every problem, and each is compelled to act upon this knowledge to the end that abundance, security, and peace shall come to all.

And I know that this spiritual democracy shall endure, guaranteeing to everyone in this country personal liberty, happiness, and self-expression.

Life is Not a Spectator Sport!

Brene Brown begins her book Daring Greatly with the following passage from  Theodore Roosevelt's speech "Citizenship in a Republic":
"It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done better.
The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause;
who at best knows in the end the triumph  of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly..."
 A few paragraphs later Brown writes: "When we spend our lives waiting until we're perfect or bulletproof before we walk into an arena, we ultimately sacrifice relationships and opportunities that may not be recoverable, we squander our precious time, and we turn out backs on our gifts, those unique contributions only we can make."
When I first read these words from Brene Brown, I was reminded of something I learned long ago and I have practiced imperfectly ever since. That is, life is NOT a spectator sport. Life is to be lived fully. It is a gift to savor and even when one discovers that she has been travelling in the wrong direction, it is about fully participating in your own life! No one else can live our lives for us. No one else's judgment is important to us. What really matters is to be in integrity with oneself.

When you make the decision to fully participate in your life there will be times when nobody agrees with you, when you feel abandoned and unsupported, when you want to crawl under the blankets and let someone else do it. It is not easy but it is completely rewarding.

When we were sorting through my mother's things we found her acknowledgement of what commitments she had made to herself at at course called The Wall. She wrote: "I commit to trust. I commit to participate fully.I commit to tell the truth."  Many of the participants of The Wall made similar commitments to themselves but it was really moving to see the words written by my mother.

Of course, when I was a child, I thought my mother was very confident, skillful and capable. She acted as if she were ten feet tall and bulletproof. As far as I could see, she did fully participate. She was worthy matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, she was the superintendent of our church Sunday School, she has active in Parent-Teacher activities. When she and my dad wintered in Mesa, Arizona, they had an active social life. Mom won a whole room-full of trophies for shuffleboard and she loved to design costumes for the annual parade. She was creative and full of life!

Now thinking back that this confident woman had taken this course when she was in her 70's and had committed to new behaviors of trust, participation and truth-telling, I realize that she too had insecurities and self-doubts. And she also was willing to change her current paradigm.

Unexpected Good

Many years ago our spiritual center gave away an "Expect a Miracle" pin. It raised questions about how could something that was expected be called  a miracle and if you expected it then it wasn't unexpected. What was it then? An ordinary?

I believe what those pins did was to make us aware of the good that is constantly around us. 

If good is already around us, why do we see it so infrequently?

I think there are several answers to that question.

First, you may not be vibrating or resonating at the frequency of good. For instance if you have a grievance against a neighbor, you may be blocking your good.

Recently a friend, whom I will call Sharon told me a wonderful story of forgiveness, cleaning things up and acceptance of prosperity. One evening after a trash pick-up day, she noticed tat her trash bin was up beside her door, not down on the street where she had left it that morning. She had not spoken to her neighbors for several years because they had had disagreements about their children playing drums at night. Now the drum player has long ago left home, but still there was friction between Sharon and her neighbors. On impulse, she went up to her neighbor to thank them for moving her trash can up closer to her home. The man answered he door loudly declaring that he would never touch anything of hers. Just then his wife came up, pushed him aside and thanked my friend for thanking her. They had a lovely thirty- minute conversation. A healing had taken place.

The next day, a prospective buyer came to look at my Sharon's home. While her realtor was showing her husband a different part of the house, Sharon complimented the woman on a unique pair of  antique gold earrings that she was wearing. The woman, a complete stranger until 10 minutes earlier, took them off and gave them to Sharon as  a gift.

I believe the two incidents are related. We live in a conscious mind that is universal, everywhere present. When we have something big or small against anyone, the possible and even probable good that might have been ours has no way to get to us.

On page 299 of  The Science of Mind, Ernest Holmes writes:
"From selfish reasons alone, if from no loftier reason, we cannot afford to find fault, to hate, or even to hold in mind anything against any living soul! The God of love cannot hear the prayer of the one who fails to love."
Another reason you may not be seeing more good could be you have not been clear about what you consider "good." For instance if you are more fascinated about what is going wrong than with expanded good, the Universe doe not have a clear order to fill. Is your television on a great portion of the time? Are you tuned in to sensationalism? The Universe can only give you what you want. It can't give you what you do not want. The Universe cannot read the word "not." 

This is a good day to let the past be past. Make amends. Be thankful for all the good in your life right now. Be thankful for your neighbors and watch the Universe say yes to you. Today is the best time to start.

Consciousness Through Breast cancer Awareness

Please keep this Essential in mind as you read on…in all of Life…

Perhaps…One of the greatest difficulties in Life is facing one's own mortality. The incidence of Breast cancer, as well as, Living with Breast cancer, and the uncertainty of it’s outcome can be a time of emotional, physical, and Spiritual upheaval in one's life. Such was my experience and expression with a diagnosis of Breast cancer in October 2005...ringing in Breast cancer Awareness month for me in some new and different ways.

It is often said that with great difficulties comes personal growth. Cancer free for 11 years now...and feeling, as well as looking, in my opinion, better than ever, that personal growth through difficulty has served me well.

This personal growth and strength can also bring a sense of accomplishment: “I made it, I finished my chemotherapy and radiation treatments and I am here to talk about it.” You reflect on what you have learned. I sure did!  The Breast cancer experience brought me to another place that I just had not encountered in normal everyday life. It is an experience that stands alone and is set apart from everything else that has ever happened to me.

And...here we are, again, in Breast cancer Awareness month...and I speak to my sisterhood (and brotherhood) of Breast cancer survivors/Thrivors...

Often others will say how much they admire you for the strength you showed in coping with Breast cancer. Accept and be proud of not only getting through breast cancer treatments but also for the Wisdom the experience has taught You. You are now in a position to give back and it will feel good. You can choose to Empower others, share what worked for you during your Breast cancer treatment, and offer encouragement to someone who has been newly diagnosed. Empowerment knows that no matter what situation you are in that there is always something positive you can do.

Given choices…No one chooses to grow by facing Life's difficulties… but this is how Empowerment begins… and together with personal growth You emerge as a person with Courage, Empowered to BE Your True Self.

Feeling Empowered is subjective… and varies from individual to individual.  But the Universal Truth of Empowerment comes from the knowledge that You have options and control over Your choices… the ability to make those choices… and the responsibility for the choices You make.

Empowerment is that feeling and conviction that comes from having gone through a difficult situation and made it. Capturing your “new normal” is taking that newly Empowered Self… and using IT to form a new and improved YOU. The way you viewed yourself in the world and how you filled your days prior to having Breast cancer will take on new meaning. Your perspective may not change at all… but for most women (as well as men) living with Breast cancer, the experience enriches their Lives and takes Life down a new path.   Finding Empowerment no matter what stage of Breast cancer treatment You are in…regardless of what season of Life You are experiencing… is about using it to create a “new normal” for YourSelf.

As a significant aside, please know that…Women are natural attractors. Yet due to cultural programming, many women have lost their way, and we end up approaching work like a man. The masculine program is all about goal-setting and goal-getting; this rarely works for women in the long-term. Instead, women must fill our cup first with what makes us come alive, and be immersed in a community of support, adventure, and inspiration. And then, we blossom...and attract!

The Dalai Lama said that the world will be saved by Western Women.  I happen to think he was right.

As a coach who has worked closely with women for over 2 decades, I find that deep-down, women naturally desire to create work that makes a difference in the world. The most important thing we can do is to discover and pursue work we Love. This is essential for our Happiness…for our Health and Well-BEING!

Human nature for many reasons focuses on living. People are busy making plans, setting financial goals, establishing career moves, building a family life, and not dwelling on the end. Often much time is wasted on unimportant things that are valued at that moment or time in your Life. Having Breast cancer brings  mortality to the forefront. What your beliefs have been before now may be questioned as the reality sets in that our Life on earth is only temporary.

Life is meant to be Lived. You are a unique partner in Life… with Purpose and Meaning to your existence! So… Why not Live it with a participatory viewpoint?  I Truly Believe…It is, perhaps, easier to prioritize the important things, experiences, and people in your Life when you have dealt firsthand difficulty, challenge, and struggle...with dis-ease...with Breast cancer. You can choose to waste less time or waste more time. Spend less time at non-Purpose and non-Meaning work  and experiences…and more time enjoying Your family and friends, Nature…and that which Truly Makes your Tail Wag!

Here’s yet another Essential to ponder…
Living with the end in mind is one way to participate in your Life with a Zest, Awareness, and Appreciation that may go unnoticed prior to having Breast cancer. Being diagnosed with Breast cancer is not a gift in itself, but the Wisdom that comes from the experience is a gift that can enrich and fulfill your life.  Trust and Believe…I know…as I often referred to my own diagnosis of Breast cancer as…”Not the best news, but not the worse news either”!  Life is meant to be Lived with the thought that… Life is not a dress rehearsal — Life is a priceless gift meant to BE embraced….and, yes…The Show must go on!

Once you have come face to face with Your mortality, then you can truly Live. Well...that's one way...anyway.
In that Spirit, Debbie Mazza-Taylor, who lost her five-year experience with Breast cancer just days before her forty-first birthday, wrote this poem:

For what is it to die but to stand naked in the wind?
And to melt into the sun.  And what is it to cease breathing, but to free the breath From its restless tides, that it may rise and expand Seeking God unencumbered?
Only when you drink from the river of silence Shall you indeed sing.
And when you have reached the mountaintop Then you shall begin to climb.
And when earth shall claim your limbs, Then shall you truly dance.

And So IT IS…Now!!!

What is Inspired Living?

What would living an inspired life look like for you? Recently we had the amazing Gino Walker treat us to her interpretation of what this means. I am in total agreement with every word she spoke. To listen to her amazing and energizing message see below:


When Gino asked us to pick a word that we could use to live that inspired life, I picked the word "Open." It is  a word to which I have aspired for a long, long time.
Merriam Webster defines aspire as: "to seek to attain or accomplish a particular goal" 
Our aspirations are the longings of our hearts. When we embody the consciousness of that to which we aspire, we will manifest proof of that embodiment. Circumstances, people and events will show you what you have been accepting as true about you and about life. It is wonderful when the Universe gives us proof that the consciousness that we are envisioning is manifesting. 

Many years ago, I was teaching English in  a secondary school in Alberta, Canada. One of the activities I did with the students was to encourage them to write in their journals every day. I would then read them and make encouraging comments. At the time, one of my favorite affirmations was: "I am open and receptive to seeing the good in everyone. Life is for me." I said my affirmations at home or in the privacy of my car. Therefore, I was completely surprised when one of my students wrote back to me, how grateful they were that I was so 'open and receptive' to their ideas. 

During Wednesday's Wisdom, when I was sharing my word with the rest of the participants, almost all of them said, "Yes, you are!"  I am deeply grateful that openness continues to manifest.

How are you growing your consciousness? Are you reminding yourself that Divine Mind is all-knowing, filled with limitless possibilities? Are you then receptive to new ideas when you hear them?

I believe that is one of the keys to a happy, fulfilled life. Listen to the longings of your heart, plant the seed of those longings already fulfilled, and then watch for the harvest.

We are powerful beyond measure, called to live on purpose in the spiritual truth.
And so it is.

Seeing the Truth in Difficult Times

Often when people go in search of prayer, they are experiencing a challenge. A loss or diagnosis, something that can be scary or painful. It's the practitioners job to know the truth in all situations and pray from a place of knowing. And what happens when a practitioner struggles with a request? Here are their beautiful and inspiring answers.

Tell me about a time when you got a treatment request that was difficult.


I usually have very little difficulty finding the perfection and truth about a situation for someone else. It is easy for me to see an individual’s light in all things because I have no attachment to the outcome. I have no personal history or drama associated with the request, I only see Love. When I do run up against something that is a challenge, I find that it is something in me that needs attention. That is when I have to work on my consciousness FIRST before  I can treat for someone else. My house needs to be clear before I can help others. ~ Reverend Arpad Petress

Someone came to me in great pain because her daughter was going through a huge health challenge.  The daughter did not believe in prayer and did not request prayer.  Since we are not allowed to pray for those who don't request it, I had to work with the mom on her own Truth.  It's often difficult to say to someone in great pain, "No, I cannot pray for that," yet I found success in revealing the perfect thing to help her find her peace.  ~ Reverend Karyn Allen

Many years ago, when I was a newly licensed Practitioner, I had an after-service client for one of our Sunday abbreviated sessions. The client wanted his one surviving elderly parent to be agreeable to transitioning into an assisted-care living situation. When the client first voiced the prayer request, it was for a change in the parent’s attitude. Of course, as a Science of Mind Practitioner, I can only pray for the person in front of me. It is malpractice for me to pray for someone who has not asked for my prayer. 

As the client continued to describe the desired outcome, I realized that what he really wanted was to not feel guilty about needing to move his parent into assisted living and to experience a healing of their relationship, at least on his side. After working with that client I realized two things. One is that almost every client requesting prayer for someone else is really looking for healing of something in themselves. And two, almost every after-Sunday- service client probably needs more than a five-minute session. ~ Pam Rocke, RScP

There was a time I had a young family ask me to pray for their husband and father to come home. It was during the holiday season. Not knowing this man, I knew I could only treat for Divine right action for him. My treatment for the entire family was for all of their hearts to be  filled with Love and God's presence along with divine right action in all of their activities. The times when I find a treatment difficult is when I forget that it’s not up to me or when the outcome the person wants seems impossible to me. Or I get tangled up in wondering how I can convince them it can happen. The wonderful thing about our 5-step treatment format is that it starts with recognizing the truth about God and the truth about myself and the person asking for treatment. So I will spend longer on those two steps—until I remember there is an absolutely unlimited power and nothing can be difficult. My part is to know this truth and speak this truth and then let go and let the Power that is unlimited take over. It is only my mind and my misgivings or doubts that I need to treat. Are YOU Experiencing Love In IT's Magnitude & Majesty?!

On Love...

The Science of Mind
As I gain wisdom with years, I've come to understand that love is not something given to us. Rather, we give love to ourselves when we let it in and open to embrace the very essence of life. The reason we are here on this planet is to love and to be loved.
Love is truly enough… Though the world maybe waiting for something more. We are waiting for something more because we have been conditioned to believe that there is someone or something outside of ourselves that will make us complete. Not so… For love and God are synonymous… Which means God is enough… For God is all there is! Really!
And ...as I reflect upon the wisdom I've gained through the years… I have come to recognize my discipline of the care and nurturance of love in my life. I liken this discipline to the discipline I have passionately persisted in as a long-distance runner for the last 41+ years. I run in the heat, wind, rain, the sun, and while visiting my family and loved ones on the East Coast… I run in the cold and the snow.
My discipline is the result of my love for running. Therefore, care of discipline is, indeed, Love!

So...here's a little more On Love...
"Love has no other desire but to fulfill itself. To melt and be like a running brook that sings it's melody to the night. To awake at dawn with a winged heart and give thanks for another day of loving."
Kahlil Gibran, my favorite Lebanese poet, said that...and he was right!
When we discover the anchor in our Self our sense of insecurity evaporates… And our capacity to love becomes less needy and truly more bountiful!
And … When we don't need our love relationship to be our security blanket… That's when love is lifted out of the mundane...That transaction, if you will… that so called, "You do this for me and I'll do that for you." That's not Love!
When love serves its grandest purpose in our lives… To enable us to grow more loving and giving...We are all winners...physically, emotionally, and Spiritually!

Today… I invite YOU to open your heart and embrace the discipline of nourishing your Spirit with Love!
Today… I invite YOU... To trust yourSelf! For it is then… And only then that we have the potential to experience and express Love in all its Authentic Power, majesty, and magnitude!
Let The Source BE with YOU...Now!
And So IT IS…Now!!!
